We really do have some fantastic businesses in Wrexham; from the multitude of SMEs on the Industrial Estate, to multi-national companies such as Wockhardt, Kelloggs and JCB Transmissions. Whilst I know that the pandemic has been tough for many of these businesses, I also know that many have thrived and grown. So, I’m continuing to work with all businesses across the constituency to help their growth and development to create better quality, well paid job opportunities for local people.
One way in which I have been doing this is by leading the Parliamentary Export Programme (PEP) in Wrexham to support businesses that are looking to develop existing exporting or would like to start exporting altogether. The PEP provides businesses with tailored support and advice to help them grow their exports.
Knowing that the past year has been financially difficult for many, I have been supporting charities and community groups that need financial assistance. I have helped secure alternative funding streams from places such as the Postcode Lottery, the National Lottery, Wales & West Utilities, and the Moondance Foundation. For example, a local church recently obtained £20,000 of funding for repairs, for which I assisted in the application; Holt Community Gardens received nearly £2000 in grant money facilitated by me; and the Victoria Park Residents Association were granted funding following an application that I supported too. These grants, along with the other funding I have helped facilitate, will all go towards making sure these community groups can continue making a positive difference in our community and our economy, helping our town to recover in the process.
Finally, through the Union Connectivity Review, I am pleased that the UK Government is investing in the transport infrastructure of the North Wales and its connectivity with England. With Wrexham being so close to the border, many travel across the border on a daily basis for work and leisure. Better connectivity benefits both businesses and jobs and that’s why I’m campaigning for better transport links between Wrexham and the surrounding areas.
