On 16 March 2021, the Government published the Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development and Foreign Policy. In response, the Defence Select Committee have launched an inquiry that will explore the document and whether it provides a clear and strategic direct for the UK's Armed Forces. The inquiry will then assess whether the forthcoming Defence Command Paper delivers the capabilities required to enable the Armed Forces to fulfil the role expected of them.
On Tuesday 13th April, the Committee heard from Dr Sidharth Kaushal, Research Fellow in Sea Power at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) and Rear Admiral Alex Burton, Former Commander, UK Maritime Forces. During this session the Committee examined what the government’s Integrated Review means for the Royal Navy, how advances in technology and the rise of grey zone threats will affect maritime security, and whether the Navy has the capabilities it needs for the future.
