'It was great to see that so many people took advantage of the host of events that were planned in Wrexham over the Platinum Jubilee weekend. From picnics in Bellevue Park to Wrexfest Live music, they did not disappoint!
Whilst Wrexham did not receive the title of the UK’s City of Culture 2025, we should all be hugely proud that our new city reached the final. It was an honour to be at Ty Pawb to celebrate how well we have done. A big thank you to everyone involved. The atmosphere at the Ty Pawb, coupled with the jubilee celebrations, shows that our city is brimming with culture and pride. We have come so far and will not stop now.
An item high on my agenda has been progressing the £22m funding given to Wrexham by the UK Government, which replaces EU funding. The UK Shared Prosperity Fund is part of the UK Government’s plan to level up the whole of the UK. To make sure your voice is heard, I went on a walkabout to find out what residents and local businesses want the money spent on. Following this, I met with the Chief Executive of Wrexham Council to let him know your opinions. I’m pleased to report that the Council is very enthusiastic about your involvement. The Council has asked me to continue to update them with your suggestions and I look forward to seeing how the Council spends the money.
If you have not done so already, please fill out my Shared Prosperity Fund survey on my website to give your view.
My campaign for better healthcare in Wrexham continues. A recent BBC Wales investigation into North Wales healthcare captured the shocking state of treatment at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital due to Welsh Government failings. Sadly, none of this is new. Following this damning report, I raised Wrexham’s health concerns to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, calling the Welsh Labour Government to make tangible improvements. A 24-week wait time for referred treatment in Wales, compared to 13 weeks in England, is not good enough and it is disappointing that we are seeing little change. But I will continue to push for the healthcare my constituents deserve.
If you have not signed my health campaign already, head over to my website to send the Welsh Government a strong message that we deserve better.
Lastly, great news that all Wrexham residents will welcome, as the new studios for Premier Radio, at Eagles Meadow, is now complete, adding another community voice for Wrexham. Every month I have a recorded chat to discuss the work I undertake in Parliament and Wrexham, which I upload onto my website.
As always, if you are a resident in Wrexham and need my assistance, please contact me by emailing sarah.atherton.mp@parliament.uk.'
