Pleased to visit Ty Dewr, which provides supported housing for Veterans in Wrexham.
The main focus of the visit was to discuss their difficulty in accessing affordable housing once they no longer need supported living.
The benefits system means that if veterans return to the workplace, often in incremental stages building up to full time, their housing benefit may stop. This means they may no longer be able to afford their current supported accommodation but can neither afford the privately rented sector, whilst social housing is now out of the reach for all but the most urgently vulnerable.
Inadvertently this is a barrier to independent living.
As such, I will be writing to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to outline these concerns and explore what can be done to support our Veterans.
