As part of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme (AFPS) I joined the Royal Marines 200 miles into the Arctic Circle in Norway. The Royal Marines were undertaking cold weather training and were practicing Arctic warfare skills in preparation for the upcoming NATO COLD RESPONSE '22 exercise, which will bring together:
- 35,000 troops
- 28 nations including Sweden and Finland.
- The Royal Navy's HMS Prince of Wales
This will be the largest Norway-led exercise in 40+ years.
It was amazing and humbling to be part of this experience and to better understand the work of the Royal Marines and especially their expertise in cold weather environments. With the developing situation in Ukraine, which the Royal Marines are prepared to provide support with, I was also pleased to be able to hear more about the work of the Marines.
