Following the outbreak of coronavirus Glyndwr University has launched a free e-module, 'The Confident Learner', aimed at those who now face a long wait until their formal education is due to start again.
Vice Chancellor of the University, Maria Hinfelaar, said:
This is an exceptionally difficult time for students, staff and their families throughout the school system in North Wales. Due to the coronavirus crisis, the school year has been disrupted, exams are not happening and large numbers of students are being sent home. This is particularly challenging for students in sixth form or on further education courses who are aiming to go to university in September.
Not only is there uncertainty about when they will get their results and how the university admissions process will work, but they also potentially face several months of academic inactivity. This would not be helpful as they prepare for life at university.
The 'Confident Leaner' course will focus on preparing students to study for higher education. It will cover subjects such as essay-writing, study planning, well-being and much more.
The 8-week module will be offered on a flexible basis by Wrexham Glyndwr University lecturers and will be free of charge. It will run four times on a staggered basis, starting April 6th up until the end of July this year. Upon completion the students will receive a certificate for 20 Higher Education credits.
A spokesperson for the University said:
We have planned sufficient capacity (200 students per 8-week start, split into “virtual” groups of 40) to provide this HE module to all students in sixth form or further education throughout North Wales, whether they are still going to school or whether they are at home. It is being delivered on-line with no requirement for face-to-face contact, in keeping with Public Health Wales advice. Once again, the module is absolutely free and will be offered to all students, wherever they are planning to study at Wrexham Glyndŵr University or anywhere else in Wales or the rest of the UK. At this time of crisis we see it as our role to help where we can.
Wrexham's MP, Sarah Atherton, said:
I am pleased to see everyone in our community playing their part to help deal with coronavirus. Glyndwr University have launched a fantastic module that will help those whose education has been impacted as a result of this outbreak.
