Today (29 April) the UK Government has announced that all care home residents and staff, in England, will have access to vital coronavirus testing regardless of whether they’re displaying symptoms.
However, the Welsh Health Minister has refused to expand the COVID-19 testing for all residents of care homes in Wales.
Wrexham’s Member of Parliament and former nurse, Sarah Atherton, disagreed with the Welsh Governments decision. She said:
"I am deeply disappointed with the Welsh Labour Governments decision not to expand testing for all residents of care homes in Wales.
“We do not know the full extent of infection of care homes, or how many residents are infected.
“It should be the Welsh Governments priority to help stop further escalation of human tragedy in care homes, and that means expanding the testing so that we can determine the true risk to both residents and staff.”
