Understandably, St David's Day celebrations will be a little different this year given the current regulations and restrictions on our lives, but I hope everyone in Wrexham will manage to find some enjoyment today in whatever way possible. Personally, I have very fond memories of St David's Day celebrations of years gone by, so I will be reminding myself of those whilst also looking forward to future celebrations.
I was pleased, however, that the traditional St David's Day Debate in the House of Commons managed to go ahead as usual. In my role as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Wales Office I was lucky enough to help organise the debate and to watch the proceedings from the Chamber. I particularly enjoyed contributions from Stephen Crabb, who reminded us of the benefit of the Union during the pandemic, Simon Baynes, who spoke about the disparity in funding between North and South Wales, and James Davies, who urged that increased investment in infrastructure into North Wales was needed to boost connectivity and to support the regional economy. All the MPs that contributed to the debate are great advocates for Wales, it's heritage and current importance within the UK and the world, and I thank them for taking part in this celebration.
This week, I will also be taking part in a number of St David's Day celebrations - all will be virtual this year, but I look forward to getting involved and to celebrating. I encourage everyone in Wrexham to get involved too!
More information on the events this year can be found here.
Thank you to Wrexham County Borough Council, Flintshire County Council, Tŷ Pawb and Menter Iaith Fflint a Wrecsam who have worked in partnership to organise these virtual celebrations.
