Welsh produce and farming is renowned the world over for its high animal welfare and food safety standards.
The UK Government has already banned cages or close confinement systems where there is clear scientific evidence that they are detrimental to animal health and welfare, and is actively looking into the use of cages. I understand that it will be considering the full range of options that are available for future reform.
Here in Wales, the Welsh Conservatives fully support welfare-friendly farming and have campaigned vigorously for the introduction of measures such as mandatory CCTV in Welsh abattoirs. Welsh consumers rightly use their purchasing power to show support for more free-range options and the growing move to buy produce with an assurance label including Red Tractor and RSPCA Assured.
I have been assured that my colleagues in the National Assembly will continue to campaign so consumers can have the fullest confidence possible when purchasing farm-assured Welsh produce.
