As part of the Budget, it was announced that Wales would get a Veterans Commissioner - a position that will support veterans, and their health and wellbeing - that will be funded directly by the UK Government. Currently, Wales is the only nation within the UK not to have a Veterans Commissioner, despite Welsh Government having the powers and ability to do so.
Due to their not being a Veterans Commissioner, veterans across Wales were being directly disadvantaged and they lack representation. A BBC Report earlier this year highlighted that veterans in Wales needed more support and from evidence around Wrexham I know that this is true. Veterans in Wales do not have the same access to health and wellbeing support as those across the border, for example, which is why I have been raising the lack of a Veterans Commissioner in Wales at every opportunity. Most recently, I asked the Secretary of State for Defence why Wales did not have one, so I am pleased that the UK Government have stepped in.
